What is Cortisol and How Does it Affect You?

Cortisol is a steroid hormone that plays a crucial role in various physiological functions within the body. Cortisol, also known as the stress hormone, tends to shoot up when we're feeling anxious or stressed, and it dips down when we're feeling chilled. But did you know there are some sneaky signs that your cortisol levels might be through the roof?

First off, you might find yourself craving junk food like crazy, especially the sugary and salty stuff. Then there's the puffy face, the constant fatigue, and even a plummeting sex drive. When cortisol levels soar, our body puts all its energy into dealing with stress, neglecting other important functions like digestion and immunity.

So, how do we bring those cortisol levels back down to Earth? Well, loading up on Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, and folic acid can give your cortisol metabolism a helpful boost. Don't forget to mix those supplements into your diet! Plus, regular exercise works wonders. Even a stroll after a long day can be super beneficial.

And don’t underestimate your sleep! It’s like magic for your body! Aim for a solid seven to eight hours a night. It might be tough with our crazy schedules, but trust me, your body will thank you.

Reconsider your caffeine intake… While it might feel like a lifesaver when you're exhausted, it can actually mess with your cortisol levels, especially if you're dealing with chronic stress. So, maybe consider cutting back a bit and opting for a few decaf coffees.

There are lots of simple things you can insert into your lifestyle to help deal with stress. Try deep breathing. You can do this anywhere and not only does it help you chill out, but it also tells your body to dial down those cortisol levels.

Try to implement at least one evening a week where you allow yourself some ‘me time’ to unwind and relax. An effective and easy activity is to run yourself a hot bubble bath. Add in Heaven Skincare’s Dream Body Wash (which doubles as a luxury bubble bath) to really indulge in some relaxation. Dream Body Wash works on a sensory level to make you sleepy while it exfoliates and moisturises - so it will help you get those well-deserved eight hours!

So there you have it! Keep those cortisol levels in check, and remember to give yourself some love and relaxation along the way.
