Skincare Essentials As You Age

As we age, our skin goes through various changes and this means adjusting your skincare routine to suit your complexion. Here, I look at how to update the products you use as you transition through your 30s, 40s and 50s.

Skincare Routine in Your 30s:

During your 30s, your focus should be on maintaining and protecting your skin's health while addressing any early signs of ageing.

Continue with the Basics: Gentle cleansers - like my Hydro Cleansing Milk - and hydrating moisturisers should remain at the core of your skincare routine.

Introduce Antioxidants: Vitamin C helps combat free radicals and protects from environmental damage.

Eye Cream: Start using a specialised eye cream to address the delicate skin around the eyes, and minimise the appearance of fine lines and maintain hydration.

Skincare Routine in Your 40s:

During your 40s, your collagen and elastin production begin to decline, resulting in more noticeable signs of ageing.

Hydrating Serums: Look for hyaluronic acid to boost moisture levels, improve elasticity and provide a plumping effect to the skin. Read more about serums here.

Collagen-Infused Products: Collagen really is your best friend as you age. It's the main structural protein in our skin, responsible for maintaining its elasticity and firmness. Find out more here.

Neck and Décolletage Care: Apply moisturisers and treatments to these areas to help prevent sagging and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

Skincare Routine in Your 50s:

As you enter your 50s, hormonal changes and a decrease in natural oil production can result in drier and more delicate skin.

Richer Moisturisers: Switch to richer, emollient moisturisers to replenish lost hydration and support the skin's barrier function.

Intensive Hydration: Consider adding hyaluronic acid-based products to provide a boost of intense hydration to your skin. It maintains moisture, improves the appearance of fine lines and restores suppleness.

Focus on Skin Firming: Incorporate products that focus on firming and lifting the skin. Look for collagen-boosting compounds to help improve skin elasticity and minimise sagging.

Products to Eliminate:

While updating your skincare routine, there are certain products that you may want to reconsider or eliminate:

Harsh Physical Exfoliants: In your younger years, physical exfoliants like scrubs may have been beneficial for promoting cell turnover. However, as you age, the skin becomes more delicate, and excessive scrubbing can lead to irritation and damage.

Alcohol-Based Toners: Toners that contain high amounts of alcohol can be drying and irritating, especially as you age. They strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to increased dryness and potential inflammation. Look for toners that are hydrating and gentle, helping to balance your skin's pH levels without causing excessive dryness.

Fragranced Products: Fragrances can be a common source of irritation, particularly for sensitive or ageing skin. Fragrance-free ensures a more gentle approach to skincare.

Instead, introduce organic must-haves into your daily routine. When I launched Heaven, it was important right from the start that my range was not only results-driven but completely natural. My ingredients use the very best nature has to offer; what we put on our skin is vital to having a healthy, radiant complexion.
