Think back to your school science classes and you may remember measuring alkaline or acid - the pH - with a little piece of litmus paper. If you wondered at the time if this information would prove useful, when it comes to your skin and the skincare you use it really does.
The pH level of our complexion – measured on a scale of 1-14 – is healthiest when it is between 6.5-7.5; this means it is performing as it should, keeping moisture in and bacteria out. If you skin has a soft texture and no dry patches then that is what we consider to be balanced; conversely, irritation, breakouts and redness are signs that it’s not as balanced as it should be.
So why does this happen? Well, it’s all down to us. From air pollution and cosmetics to detergents, sun exposure and anti-bacterial soap, we are surrounded by factors that play their part. In my experience though, what we eat plays a major role.
Modern diets are filled with acid-forming food. Just look in your cupboards and fridge and count the amount sugary treats, processed meats and sweetened drinks. If you are filling your plate with these every day, as well as the extra glass of wine or two, then you can’t expect your complexion to be anywhere near perfect.
Dairy certainly takes its toll too and can lead to skin issues such as eczema and psoriasis (you can read more about this on my blog here and here) so switching to a diet that’s filled with fresh, vitamin-rich vegetables can be a real boost. However, a diet that’s too strict and restrictive can lead to skin flare-ups.
