How to Protect Your Skin During a Heatwave

What is the best way to protect your skin in a heatwave?

The best way to protect your skin during a heatwave is to wear daily SPF, reapply it regularly, stay in the shade during the hottest part of the day, keep the skin hydrated and use lightweight products that do not clog the complexion.

Your skin needs both protection and comfort. Heavy creams can feel too rich in hot weather, while skipping moisturiser completely can leave the skin barrier vulnerable. The key is to use light layers that hydrate, calm and protect.

1. Wear SPF every single day

SPF is the most important step in any heatwave skincare routine. UV rays can contribute to premature ageing, pigmentation, sunburn and long-term skin damage. Even if you are only popping out for a short walk, sitting near a window or driving, your skin is still exposed to UV light.

Choose a broad-spectrum SPF and apply it generously to your face, neck, chest and hands. These are the areas most often exposed and can be the first to show signs of sun damage.

2. Reapply your SPF throughout the day

One application in the morning is not enough during a heatwave. Sweat, heat, touching your face and being outdoors can all reduce your level of protection. Reapply your SPF every 2 hours, especially if you are outside, exercising or sweating.

A simple rule: if your skin is exposed, your SPF needs topping up.

3. Keep your skin hydrated

Heat can cause your skin to lose water more quickly. This can leave the complexion looking flat, tired or tight. Hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin B5 and lightweight moisturisers can help support the skin barrier and keep the complexion looking fresh.

A facial mist is also a beautiful way to refresh the skin throughout the day, especially when kept cool.

4. Avoid over-exfoliating

During hot weather, it can be tempting to scrub away sweat and oil, but over-exfoliating can make the skin more sensitive to the sun. Keep exfoliation gentle and avoid using strong actives before spending time outdoors.

Instead, focus on cleansing, hydration and protection.

5. Cleanse properly at the end of the day

Heatwave skin needs a proper evening cleanse. SPF, sweat, pollution and makeup can sit on the skin throughout the day, so cleansing helps remove build-up and keep the complexion clear.

Use a gentle cleanser that leaves the skin feeling clean but not stripped.

6. Stay in the shade when the sun is strongest

SPF is essential, but it should not be your only form of protection. Try to stay in the shade during the hottest part of the day, wear sunglasses and use a hat where possible. This helps reduce direct UV exposure and keeps the skin calmer.
