You might be surprised to learn that having plants in your office can be good for more than just aesthetics.
Plants and green space increase the overall atmosphere of the workplace, which can have a much bigger impact on mental health than you think. Not only can green space increase happiness and productivity, it can also encourage positive relationships and reduce stress.
In fact, studies have shown that people who work at offices with plants have a more positive attitude towards their work, coworkers and management. They also feel less stressed out when compared to those who work in offices without plants.
“I actually do treatments on people and train in treatments to help people with mental health, so it wouldn't be very good for us if we didn't look after our staff in the same way. That's why we've got lots of flowers and green space in the offices that give out oxygen,” says Deborah Mitchell.
There is extensive research that backs up the fact that an aesthetically pleasing environment has a positive impact on employee satisfaction. No-one wants to come to work and sit in a dull and lifeless office; creating a welcoming and enjoyable workplace benefits both an employer and an employee. It can increase happiness and creativity, which in turn, boosts productivity.
“In the hub of our office there's a kitchen so that we can all come to relax and talk, and at any time during the working day people can come and get themselves a coffee and sit out. The reason why they can do that is because it's good for mental health. I always think I get my best ideas in the bath and people are working anywhere these days so I think a lot of companies should think about that,” explains Deborah.
So, maybe its time to prioritise a healthy workspace, whether that means adding some greenery to your desk at home, or in the office.
