Marine-derived collagen has certainly made a splash. But what is this latest trend about and how can the deep blue sea be the secret to great-looking skin?
What is marine-derived collagen? It's generally a by-product of the fishing industry and is extracted from fish scales. It is made up of Type I and Type III collagen, and is an antioxidant and contains amino acids.
How does collagen help? Because it is the most abundant protein our bodies produce it plays a vital role in the structure of our skin, bones and connective tissue. Think of it as the glue that helps our body maintain its firmness as its binds tissues and cells together.
As we age, the amount of collagen we produces drops. In fact, by the time we’re 50 we’ve already lost up to a third of it. As our cell structures weaken, skin starts to sag, becomes thinner and loses its youthful elasticity.
Did you know … Collagen is great for boosting hair too? This is because it acts as an anti-oxidant, protecting against the negative effects caused by free radicals. As well as damaging our skin, these free radicals can damage our hair follicles as well. So by upping your collagen levels you can boost hair volume, growth and regeneration.
