What To Eat To Ease Rosacea

As April is Rosacea Awareness Month, I’m taking a look at the condition and foods that can trigger flare-ups. Here’s my advice on what you should and shouldn’t eat if you have rosacea.

If you suffer from rosacea you’ll know only too well the impact it can have. In fact a recent survey by the National Rosacea Society revealed that 90% of those who experience it said it lowered their self-esteem and self confidence.

What is rosacea? It’s an inflammatory skin condition and typically you’ll experience flushing and pimples on your nose, chin, cheeks and forehead. This can become intense after eating spicy food or drinking alcohol and caffeine.

Foods to Eat

Non-acidic fruits and vegetables: Leafy greens, cucumbers, courgettes, carrots and berries, are a great addition to any rosacea-friendly diet. They are rich in the antioxidants, vitamins and minerals to promote healthier skin.

Lean proteins: Chicken, fish, turkey and tofu are low in fat and can help to reduce inflammation in the body, which can help to reduce the appearance of rosacea symptoms.

Whole grains: Brown rice, quinoa, and whole wheat bread are a great source of fibre to regulate blood sugar levels. This can be beneficial, as high blood sugar levels have been linked to inflammation and rosacea flare-ups.

Foods to Avoid

Spicy foods: Steer clear of those hot peppers and curry which can cause flushing and inflammation.

Alcohol: A common trigger, it can cause redness, inflammation and flushing in the face.

Caffeine: Caffeine is a stimulant so it is best to limit your intake of coffee and tea.

Other Tips for Managing Rosacea

Identify and avoid triggers: Keep a diary of any specific triggers and avoid them when possible.

Be gentle with the skin: Avoiding harsh scrubs and using gentle skincare products instead. You can read more of my advice in my blog post here.

Manage your stress: Because stress can cause flare-ups, look for ways that can keep you calm, such as exercise or meditation.
